Apartment Utility Costs: What You Need to Know

Looking for apartments near Eskenazi Hospital and IUPUI? You may find several comparable apartments along the White River or the Canal Walk, but utility costs can vary considerably. Before you sign your next lease, make sure you have some idea of what those costs could be, so you don’t end up with unmanageable utility bills.

High Ceilings = Higher Energy Costs

Standard ceiling height is 8 or 9 feet. Ceilings higher than 9 feet increase the cubic footage inside a living space, which means heating and cooling costs are higher than average (especially in vintage buildings with single-pane windows).

Here’s a look at the cubic footage of a 700-square-foot apartment, based on ceiling height:

  • 9-foot ceilings: 6,300 cubic feet

  • 14-foot ceilings: 9,800 cubic feet

That difference in cubic footage could result in some hefty utility bills in winter and summer.

Water/Sewer Costs

Many apartments include the costs of water/sewer in monthly rent. However, it’s always a good idea to ask if that’s the case, because some rental properties require tenants to pay all utilities. If you pay your own water/sewer bill and you have a dishwasher, a washer and dryer, and a roommate or two, that bill could be $40-$50 a month.

Cable/Internet/Phone Service

When a property has high-speed internet access, that simply means you can get that service; it doesn’t mean that internet access is included in your rent. Depending on the services you want, you may be able to find bundled packages that reduce your costs, but beware of the fine print – cable providers often have introductory offers that, after expiration, are much more expensive.

Electricity Costs

If you live in an apartment that doesn’t include electricity costs in rent, you can minimize your monthly bill by practicing some good habits (such as turning off lamps in vacant rooms, or shutting off computers and audio-visual equipment when it’s not in use).
