Apartment storage hacks: 6 ways to make the most of your space

Are the contents of your closets spilling out into the room? Does the path from your kitchen to the bedroom feel like something out of Ninja Warrior? If you’re not sure how to make your apartment feel more breezy and spacious, you’re not alone. The good news is you don’t need a sledgehammer to reimagine your living space; you just need a little creativity. Here are six ways to open up your space and get smart about storage.

Our favorite trick: mirrors

Have you ever walked into a room and were startled to realize what you thought was an adjoining room was actually a mirror? When space is at a premium, a well-placed mirror is the easiest way to transform a room. According to Apartment Therapy, it can visually double your square footage. Try a mirror behind the headboard of your bed, in an entryway, or across the room from a bright window. (Psst... ask us about a River West apartment unit with a view of beautiful downtown Indianapolis!)

Simplify your colors and finishes

Blending tones and finishes create a streamlined effect. Look at Studiomama co-founder Nina Tolstrup’s incredible 400 square foot apartment. “Using a lot of the same material helps blur the lines of the space and give a more rounded and open feel in a small space,” Tolstrup told Architectural Digest.

Transparent furniture

Glass or lucite tables and chairs make a room feel more spacious and airy and also allow your more dramatic elements to stand out and get the attention they deserve.

Get creative with shelving

Tall, narrow shelving units can be placed in corners and entryways and don’t eat up a lot of wall space. Floating shelves can go just about anywhere, and units with open backs and sides are more visually unobtrusive. Check out this apartment’s shelving placed near the top of the wall above the TV. It’s functional and incredibly chic!

Low tables and cabinets

Furniture pieces that are low to the ground are more unassuming and leave room on the walls for decorative elements and shelving. This chic, low-slung cabinet/bookshelf serves its purpose without overwhelming the room.

Secret storage! Coffee tables and beds with built-in storage are game-changers for apartment living. There are so many clever and modern options that coordinate well with any style, and one new piece of furniture can really refresh a room if you’re looking for a change.

Minimalism is in! In this age of utilizing space for a variety of functions, you need an apartment that works for you. River West Flats has nine floor plans in a variety of configurations to suit any lifestyle. Call us at 317-620-5524 to schedule a tour.
