Our favorite 8 local spots you can walk to from River West Flats

Downtown Indianapolis is a truly unique city that offers the friendliness and convenience of a small town with all the unique art, culture, and excitement of a big city. Whether you’re a transplant, or you’ve been living in Indianapolis for a while and just haven’t had a chance to explore the downtown area very much, this might be just the page you’re looking for. Here are eight places locals love right in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. If you live at the River West Flats, you can easily walk or bike to any of them.

The Children’s Maze

It’s called The Children’s Maze, but people of all ages will enjoy a walk in this whimsical green space adorned with stone blocks that form a circular maze. They’re perfect for resting, reflecting, and climbing on, too! Bring a picnic, or grab a book from the nearby Evolution of Reading exhibit, which is the first stop on the White River Canal Public Art Tour and also functions as a little free library!

Wishard Slow Food Garden

Nearly 6,000 square feet, this is one of three community gardens operated by Growing Places Indy, and their hope is that its unique location prompts visitors to ask questions and get involved in urban agriculture. They also offer workshops with topics such as Walking and Tasting on the farm, Tomatoes 101, and Mindful Eating. Visit Growing Places Indy to sign up for a workshop, donate, or become a volunteer.

The Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library

No visit downtown is complete without a visit to the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library, where you can see the Indianapolis author’s typewriter, Purple Heart, reading glasses, artwork, and other personal items on loan from the family. The library also offers classes, workshops, and a gathering space for those in the neighborhood.

The Indianapolis Cultural Trail

Connecting Indy’s unique public spaces, the Indianapolis Cultural Trail offers a lovely place to take a walk or a bicycle ride and enjoy the many works of art, gardens, and cultural attractions along the way. There are several bike-share stations along the way and an expansion planned to take the trail even further.

City Market

Whether taking a lunch break from your workday or just taking a break from exploring downtown, this massive indoor farmer’s market is a required stop. Shop hundreds of vendors for gourmet food, artisan coffee or tea, unique gifts, and fresh flowers, or take a tour of the Catacombs beneath the market.

The American Legion Mall

The American Legion Mall outside of the American Legion Headquarters in downtown Indianapolis is just one of the many war memorials you’ll find in downtown Indianapolis. The Soldiers and Sailors monument in the city’s center might be the most well-known memorial, but the Mall offers a lovely outdoor green space perfect for a picnic, or for quiet reflection, and a welcomed break from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding city. The mall stretches from Clair Street to North Street between Meridian and Pennsylvania. From Clair Street, you can observe the Cenotaph, memorializing the nation's first casualty of World War I, and the World War II, Korean, and Vietnam memorials behind it.

The Sammich Shop

With a 4.9 rating on Google, the Sammich Shop is another not-to-miss downtown Indy staple. They serve hot and cold sandwiches, soups, salads, and smoothies that the locals rave about, and it’s just three miles from the River West Flats in Indianapolis.

Kroger, 227 West Michigan Ave.

When you’re winding down after a long day of work or play, the last thing you want to do is waste time grocery shopping. Luckily, this Kroger grocery store location is only two miles from the River West Flats and offers options for pickup or delivery straight to your apartment.
