Trails and Bike Lanes Promote Healthy Living in Downtown Indianapolis

For people who enjoy walking, bicycling, and running, there’s never been a better time to live in downtown Indianapolis. The city has added miles of bike lanes over the past several years, as part of its Bicycle Master Plan and created networks of mixed-use trails that connect outlying neighborhoods with the downtown area.

When you live and work downtown, you may find you rarely need to (or want to) drive. Here’s an overview of where you can go by bicycle or on foot if you live downtown:

  • To the grocery store.

If you live in apartments near IUPUI, the Kroger on West Michigan Street is an easy bike-ride away – about 2 miles from Eskenazi hospital. That’s just one of several groceries in the downtown area.

  • To Broad Ripple.

The near-northside neighborhood of Broad Ripple is known for its nightlife, restaurant scene, and limited parking. Avoid the parking hassles – and burn some calories – by riding your bike.

The White River Trail runs along the eastern side of the river, north to 38th Street, where it connects with the Central Canal Towpath. Follow the towpath to arrive at Broad Ripple Avenue. This 17-mile round trip takes you through some beautiful parts of the city.

  • To Garfield Park.

On the west side of the river, the White River Trail runs south to Raymond Street, which leads to Garfield Park, the oldest park in Indianapolis. It’s a quick 5.6-mile ride, one-way.

For Walkers and Runners

Indianapolis has plenty of options for walkers and runners. At White River State Park, you can pick up the White River Trail, the 3-mile Downtown Indy Canal Walk, or the Indianapolis Cultural Trail (the cultural trail also connects with the canal at Walnut Street).

The cultural trail loops back to White River State Park, with an offshoot leading to the Fountain Square neighborhood. It’s a great way to explore the city.

If you’re an avid runner, sign-up for the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon. The course spans 13.6 miles between downtown Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. And if you live at River West Flats apartments on White River Parkway, you’re about 2 miles from the finish line.
